What is DEVO?

DEVO is a punk rock and new wave band from Akron, Ohio formed in 1973. The band has 9 studio albums in total ranging from 1978 to 2010. They're also notable for their matching outfits, which change for every album.

DEVO dressed as cowboys

The name "DEVO" comes from the concept of "De-evolution" (which is part of their full name, "The De-Evolution Band"); which is exactly what it sounds like, the idea that humanity is beginning to regress instead of evolve. This idea started out as a joke, but would be taken into serious consideration after the Kent State massacre, which was the driving force for the formation of DEVO.

"Spuds"

  • “Spud” Is the official term for a DEVO fan (Though "Mutants" and less frequently "Devotees" are also used). The term comes from DEVO’s frequent mention of potatoes in their lyrics and also serves as a reminder that DEVO fans are not exempt from de-evolution.
